Skrillex Nominated for 5 Grammy’s
The Grammy nominations come out last night and the biggest news in the electronic music world is Skrillex being nominated for 5 Grammy’s (view all nominations below)! That’s more than Deadmau5 (3 nominations), David Guetta who was just ranked # 1 DJ in the world by DJmag.com (2 nominations), and any other electronic artist in the world! DJmag.com ranked Skrillex at #19 (source: http://www.djmag.com/top100).
So why is there such a variance between how the Grammy’s view Skrillex versus DJmag? Is it because he has become such a mainstream artist (his music has been featured in many commercials, from video games to vacation ones) or because he really is this great of an artist?
I for one think he revolutionized electronic music and was the forefront face of the movement of one of the largest sub-genres of electronic music – dubstep. I was lucky to have seen Skrillex much before he was as mainstream as he is today – at Fuzzy Festival on November 20, 2010. This show, in Victorville, CA – aka middle of nowhere – was headlined by Donald Glaude, NOT Skrillex, and was done just after his release of his EP Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites. No one knew any of the words to any of his music and the crowd seemed confused by what was happening. Today, everyone can chant the lyrics of his track Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites. It has been interesting watching his development from a small DJ to an artist who has been nominated for 5 Grammy’s!
Please share your thoughts about Skrillex receiving 5 Grammy’s below in the discussion. I’m curious to hear your thoughts.
